Release Date: Novermber 11, 2003.
InstallSpy is a small software application which monitors shell events, registry entries, files and running processes on the PC. Track any and all changes to the registry and file system, and also record all shell notification events (e.g. media inserted), when a program is installed, uninstalled, or run.
The program's interface is fairly simple with all the options set in the main window. The "Filter Settings" option allows you to change the options set for shell events, registry and files. You can add different directories, files and registry keys or values to the ignore list.
The help file enclosed into the app can answer the questions regarding the configuration, filter settings and different warnings. The help file also has three tutorials about the processes and settings for InstallSpy.
The first step in using the app is to determine what type of events the app will identify. The utility can be set to detect shell events, registry, file, or processes.
The tool asks you to close any non-essential programs and starts a file and registry scan. After assigning different permissions and performing the scans, the app opens the default browser and shows the generated report.
The report contains a list with your running programs (process and parent ID, threads and priority assigned to the programs), disk usage report of free space, registry and file changes. Although the program is simple to run, in order to generate the report you have to go through up to seven different actions which take up time.
