Release Date: May 3, 2003.
WinMac is a free program that allows Windows 95, 98, NT4, 2000, Me, and XP users to add a Macintosh-style menu bar to their system. WinMac is written in Visual Basic v5.0 by Michael Mallory.
There are numerous ways in which one can tweak their computer and since the looks of OS X has been coveted since the dawn of time by lots of users, a utility like WinMac will surely be welcomed on many PCs.
What this little application does is bring a menu bar that sits on the upper side of the desktop and provides a set of quick commands for performing a variety of tasks. As some would expect, not all the functions are working properly and some depend on the Windows version the tool is deployed on.
The skin of the bar can be easily changed from the 'View' menu to make it look like System 7, Mac OS 8 and 9, Mac OS X Server, Mac OS X Aqua and Mac OS Brushed Metal. WinMac facilitates the creation of new folders, the modification of desktop icons and it can be used to hide the Windows taskbar with one click.
A set of special extra commands are also provided, so it is possible to empty the recycle bin, open the CD/DVD-ROM tray and perform some power actions like restart, shutdown or log off.
An important thing to be mentioned is the fact that the configuration of the menus and the functions displayed by WinMac differ depending on the selected skin, so it is worth exploring each option in order to become familiarized with each type of view and the features it offers.
